About Ireland
Ireland, located just west of Britain, is an island of 5 million people. It's less than 300 miles long and 200 miles wide but you will soon discover that this small country has a big heart!
Ireland is a land of beautiful and contrasting scenery with a myriad of inland lakes, waterways, mountains and vast expanses of pretty countryside. In a country so small, the variety of its scenery is a true wonder.
As beautiful as Ireland is, the country's main attraction is its people - their hospitality, their felicitous use of language and their marvellous sense of humour ensure a warm welcome.
A traditional land of saints and scholars, Ireland is today a progressive part of the new Europe. Accessible by air from all major European cities, Ireland enjoys one of the cleanest environments in Europe and a mild and temperate climate.
Irish people retain the old values of warmth, friendliness and family - and love to talk. George Bernard Shaw once said that "the best English is spoken in Ireland". It is no wonder then that many of the most renowned BBC radio and television presenters are Irish-born! Ireland and the Irish will truly win your heart.
